  • We, who live in these United States of America, have been blessed with so much and have great cause to be grateful. Today we celebrate the nation’s 243 birthday, the independence we celebrate is the separation from tyrannical rule and not from one another. Not one of us is an island unto him- or herself. None of us is solely responsible all that we have. Everything that we have is because of the efforts of another. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the vehicles we drive, the electricity we use—are all the result of decades of work of those who have come before us. And those who have come before us are of various ethnic backgrounds. No ethnicity has a monopoly on “good ideas.” As much as our American culture values independence, let’s not fool ourselves: we live in community, dependent upon the efforts of those who have come before us and the ones who live beside us. The fact that we are still here is a testament to the fact that our strength lies in our diversity and inclusion of all peoples, all races, all customs, not solely the Euro-centric. So today and everyday, let’s remember that this country, this melting pot of cultures and ethnicity of peoples from all around the world, this experiment in democracy exists for and because of all of us.   • Happy Pride! Have pride! Be proud! . Pride is so much more than rainbow flags, parades, and wild costumes. It’s that time of year—the entire month of June—when the LGBT community celebrates with “pride” (as in the opposite of shame) who they are. . This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. That was the incident where it all began, when LGBTQ people decided to stand up and not live in fear of being who they were. . This year is also the first time that WorldPride, the international organization that promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues, will take place on US soil. .
