America 250

To say that the true history of America—not the romanticized, made-for-TV origin story—is a complicated one would be a gross understatement at best. While some would say it is a tale of independence, courage, and patriotism, it is so much more. Our American adventure also includes episodes of subjugation, systemic oppression, state-sanctioned terror, theft, and, yes, genocide.

As we celebrate our nation’s semiquincentennial year, may we strive to make our country a more perfect union that delivers on its foundational promises to all citizens, immigrants, and strangers—a nation known for its profound ability to respect and care for everyone under our skies.

These United States are not a monolith. We are a testament to God’s creativity. We are a testament to strength in the diversity of ideas, cultures, and peoples. We have the potential to be a testament to humanity at its best, when we choose to work together.
As Maya Angelou wrote, “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” Everyone longs to be accepted, understood, and loved.

Happy 250th birthday, United States! May we be blessed with 250 more.

Love one another.
